Gerrit Kool is a Senior Research and Development Engineer at the department of Gas Turbines & Structural Integrity of the Netherlands Aerospace Centre NLR. He has more than 35 years of experience in aerospace, gas turbines and high tech materials. From a materials engineering background he was involved in manufacturing, testing and evaluation, welding & high temperature brazing and heat treating of many materials. Did failure analyses and managed the design/manufacturing/commissioning of complex rotating test equipment in cooperation with large gas turbine OEMs within international R&D programs.
Since 2008 he is involved in Additive Manufactured materials, particularly laser deposition and selective laser melting of metals. More recently NLR is developing Technology for Additive Manufacturing of metals and the acceptance of parts through qualification and certification in close cooperation with national and international partners. The first printed product in the Netherlands by metal additive manufacturing that actually flew on a helicopter at year-end 2016 was a ladder mount for the NH90 helicopter of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The project was a collaborative venture, with Fokker Aerostructures, NLR-Netherlands Aerospace Center for 3D printing and testing, BPO-Delft and the Defence Materiel Organisation. Gerrit Kool led this programme that resulted in a 40 % weight reduced and certified product.
